The surname Lewis got its start as the Frankish word “Hludwig” and dates back prior to the fifth century. It is translated in two parts: hlud means loud or famous, while wig means battle. The French adapted Hludwig after the Roman Empire to Clovis and then to Louis. It was later anglicized as Lowis and Lewis and was first recorded as a surname in the thirteenth century in Essex. The Welsh also have a name that denotes leadership, “Llywelyn” and became Lewis in later years.
