Most Common Surname Beginning with "S": Smith

Smith is attributed to ancient Anglo-Saxon origins before the seventh century and is derived from the word “smitan” and originally designated a soldier rather than someone who worked with iron like a blacksmith. The soldiers wore armor and would go to a blacksmith to get it repaired and most likely led to the more common meaning of Smith. In the Middle Ages, guilds listed included whitesmith, blacksmith, goldsmith and silversmith, although no “smiths” were named without an association because they were soldiers. Various spellings still occur, including Smythe and Smithe, but Smith is an enduringly popular surname and has over five hundred coats of arms designated to Smith families.
