Underwood is a surname of Scottish and English descent that comes from the Olde English words that designated a person who lived in or just outside the forest. Literally, under wood meant living beneath the trees and was more a location than a name. Underwood is also a place in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Ayrshire in England.
