Information contained in this index includes child's name (names may be truncated at 8 letters), gender, birth date, birth county, and mother's maiden name (names may be truncated at 8 letters). If possible, it is important that you use the information found in this index to order a copy of the birth certificate, as the certificate may provide additional information about the child or the parents.

This database is an index to over 15 million births recorded in Texas between 1903 and 1997. Information contained in this index includes:

  • Child's full name
  • Sex
  • Birth date
  • Birth county

Some records also include:

  • Names of both parents
  • Birth certificate number

In some cases, where the names of the parents are provided, the parents' names were recorded incorrectly. Occasionally the mother's name was recorded in the father's place and the father's name was recorded in the mother's place. Therefore, you may need to switch which fields you put the parents' names in, in order to produce results.

Modern birth records are extremely valuable, but many researchers, learning birth information from home sources, fail to obtain birth certificates. This reluctance is most unfortunate and can result in an inaccurate or incomplete family genealogy. Use the information in this index to request a copy of the birth certificate. The original record will typically include additional information that is not found in the index. For information on how to order a copy of a birth certificate, visit the Texas Department of State Health Services website.

Modern birth records contain much more information than earlier records. Although birth certificates vary from state to state, most of them share much information in common.

Probated or delayed birth registrations were sometimes submitted to the respective county court. These were then forwarded to the State Bureau of Vital Statistics. Microfilm indexes to delayed birth records include Texas residents born elsewhere, many of whom were seeking Social Security registration. The bureau ended delayed birth registration in 1959.

Birth records will generally contain the following information: Child--name, birthplace, date of birth, sex, hospital, time of birth; Father--name, race, birthplace, age, occupation; Mother--name, race, birthplace, age, occupation, residence. Sometimes you will also learn term of residence in the community, term of pregnancy, marital status, number of other living children, number of other deceased children, number of children born dead.

On the images of the index, counties are listed with a code. For reference, the following table is provided with each county and its code.

This database is an index created by the Minnesota Department of Health to approximately 4.2 million births occurring in Minnesota between 1935 and 2002. Information contained in this index includes child's full name, father's full name, mother's maiden name, birth date, birth county, and state file number. With the information provided in this index, you may be able to obtain a copy of a birth certificate. If possible, it is important that you do this because oft times more information is provided in an original record than is provided in its index. For information on how to order a copy of a birth certificate, visit the Minnesota Department of Health website.

In 1907 the Minnesota Vital Records law was enacted, giving the state the responsibility of keeping birth and death records. Their records for births start in 1900 and deaths in 1908. Both are indexed to the present but not available for research in person. There is no statewide marriage index until 1958. The fee ($11 for a birth record and $8 for a marriage or death record) will include a search and a copy of the request record or a statement that the record is not on file. Send to the Minnesota Department of Health, Section of Vital Records, P.O. Box 9441, 717 Delaware Street S.E., Minneapolis, Minnesota 55440.

Taken from Maki, Carol L. "Minnesota," in Ancestry's Red Book, ed. Alice Eichholz. (Salt Lake City: Ancestry, 1992).

Vital records can be great sources of genealogical information. Besides providing the name of the person for whom the record was created, vital records can provide a wealth of other information. Birth records will generally, but not always, contain the following information: Child - name, birthplace, date of birth, sex, hospital, time of birth; Father - name, race, birthplace, age, occupation; Mother - name, race, birthplace, age, occupation, residence, term of residence in the community, term of pregnancy, marital status, number of other living children, number of other deceased children, number of children born dead.

Modern (post-1910) birth records are maintained by the states. They are extremely valuable, but many researchers, learning birth information from home sources, fail to obtain birth certificates. This reluctance is most unfortunate and can result in an inaccurate or incomplete family genealogy. Modern birth records contain much more information than earlier records. Although birth certificates vary from state to state, most of them share much information in common.

Taken from Cerny, Johni, "Research in Birth, Death, and Cemetery Records." In The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy, ed. Loretto Dennis Szucs and Sandra Hargreaves Luebking (Salt Lake City: Ancestry, 1997).

This database is an index to over 5.9 million births recorded in Kentucky between 1911 and 1999. Information contained in this index includes child’s name, child’s gender, birth date, birth county, mother’s name, registered date, volume year, volume number, and birth certificate number. Note: Not all entries will contain all of this information. There is a small bug in the data and records from Rowan County are misindexed as Breathitt County. Researchers may want to search both counties, and be cautious in the interpretation of these records. With the information provided in this index, you may be able to obtain a copy of a birth certificate. If possible, it is important that you do this because oft times more information is provided in an original record than is provided in its index. For information on how to order a copy of a birth certificate, visit the Kentucky Department of Health, Vital Records website.

This database is an index extracted from more than 2.3 million birth, baptism, and christening records from New Jersey.

What's in the Index

Volunteers extracted the birth, baptism, and christening details in this index from microfilmed copies of church, civil, family, and other records from New Jersey. Note that the number of available records can vary widely by county, and this database does not necessarily represent a comprehensive set of birth, baptism, and christening records for the state during this time.

Details in the index entries vary depending on the original record, but they may include

  • name
  • gender
  • race
  • birthplace
  • birth date
  • christening place
  • christening date
  • death date
  • age at death
  • father's name, age, birthplace
  • mother's name, age, birthplace
  • paternal grandparents
  • maternal grandparents
  • FHL film number
    • Death dates and ages refer to children who died near or at birth.

The FHL film number refers to a microfilm copy of the source held by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Because this database includes details extracted from family records, researchers will want to confirm facts with original and primary sources.

Family historians with roots in the Bay State will be thrilled to know that Massachusetts ranks high when it comes to keeping vital records, with some dating back to early Colonial days. Records were kept on the town level, but in 1841 towns began sending copies of birth, marriage, and death records to the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Although not all towns complied immediately, most did, and birth records from that state-level collection are the source for this database.
