Archer Genealogy & History
Archer is an English occupational name derived from old French "archier", meaning professional bowman, an esteemed and valuable occupation in medieval times, whose members included bodyguards to the King. The earliest recording of English Archer genealogy was in Wiltshire, England, in 1166, where the Archer family was granted lands after the Norman conquest. In American Archer family history, gentleman-attorney Gabriel Archer explored the coast of New England in 1602 and joined Captain John Smith in 1607 to explore Virginia, with the James River point "Archer's Hope" named in his honor. The family motto of "sola bona quae honesta" means "honesty above all".
