Bacon Genealogy & History
Bacon is an English-French surname of Germanic origin. Three derivations have been proposed: occupational bacun (to bake, such as dry pork), descriptive baco (to fight), and geographic baccen (beech tree). Bacon family history traces back to 1066 when French Duke William of Normandy granted the Bacon family seigniory (feudal lordship) after the Battle of Hastings; a century later some emigrated to Suffolk, England. English philosopher-statesman Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626), first Baron Verulam, is renowned in Bacon genealogy. The first Bacons in America immigrated to both Massachusetts and Virginia in 1635. "Mediocria firma," meaning "moderation is surest", is the Bacon motto.
