Bailey Genealogy & History

Bailey is an English occupational surname derived from Latin "Baiulivus" and French "Bailli" meaning "official", equivalent in stature to an alderman or sheriff. In Scotland, the court bailiff is still called "bailie." Secondarily, the name can be locational, descriptive of living by the outermost wall ("Bailly") of the medieval castle or town (such as London's Old Bailey courthouse) or from the Lancashire town Baily (meaning berrywood). The first recording in Bailey family history is for Roger le Baylly in 1230 in Suffolk, while American Bailey genealogy began in Massachusetts in the 1630s. The Bailey motto is "ubi bene ibi patria", meaning "one's country is where one feels well".
