Baldwin Genealogy & History

Baldwin, a medieval English surname and given name, is derived from the Old English "bealdwine" and Old German "baldavin", meaning "bold friend". Also said to mean "speedy conqueror", Baldwin was the name of five Crusader kings, including the first Christian king of Jerusalem in 1100. Such Baldwin successes made the name very popular in northern France (Normandy and Flanders) in the Middle Ages, as reflected in their French motto: "Je n'oublierai pas" meaning "I will not forget". In English Baldwin family history, King William granted them lands after the Norman conquest (1066). In American Baldwin genealogy, the first immigrants were to Massachusetts and Virginia in the 1620s.
