Barber Genealogy & History
Barber is an ancient Scottish occupational surname derived from the Old French "barbier", based on the Latin "barba", meaning "beard". In the Middle Ages, the occupation of barber entailed dental surgery skills as well as cutting hair and shaving. The gold shield in the Barber coat of arms has two red chevrons between three red fleurs-de-lis, with a bull's head crest and gold coronet. The family motto of "nihilo nisi cruce" means "nothing but the cross". Barber family history includes a family seat in Cumberland in ancient times and immigrants to Virginia in the 1620s. Spelling variations Barbour and Barberton are included in Barber genealogy.
