Beach Genealogy & History

Beach is an English locational name of uncertain derivation. It could be derived from Old English "baec", meaning "stream"; or "bec", meaning "beech nut"; or "beche" meaning "valley". Spelling variations include Becke, Beche, and Beech. Beech nuts were a staple of the winter medieval diet, and, of course, proximity to water was important. The Beach family history dates back to the 11th century in Hertfordshire and before that in Normandy; Gosfrid le Beche fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. American Beach genealogy includes Richard Beach in Massachusetts in 1635 and Stephen Beach in Virginia in 1639.
