Benton Genealogy & History
Benton is a locational Anglo-Saxon name, referring primarily to "Bentune" villages in Northumberland, later called Beneton and Bentona, and secondarily to Benton in Devonshire. Benton is derived either from the Old English "bean", meaning beans, or the Old English "beonet", meaning bent-grass, combined with "tun", meaning enclosure. English Benton family history includes a family seat (feudal manor) in Northumberland prior to 1066, with the first recorded spelling Benntine in 1548 in Cumberland. A coat of arms granted to the Benton family has an azure lion on a gold shield with silver fretwork. In American Benton genealogy, the first emigrant was to Virginia in 1635.
