Berger Genealogy & History
Berger, found throughout Europe, has two derivations. A variation of the locational Berg, it is derived from Old English/Scandinavian "beorg" and Old High German "burg", meaning fortified hill. A second derivation is occupational for shepherd, derived from French "Bergere", which comes from Latin "Berbex", meaning ram. Berger family history in England dates back to ancient times in Cambridgeshire, where the family held a family seat (feudal manor). In the 16th century, Bergers migrated throughout Europe. Variations on the name include Berchaire, Bercher, Borge, and Burgher. In American Berger genealogy, the first immigrant arrived in New York in 1709.
