Brady Genealogy & History

Brady is a descriptive Irish/English name, perhaps derived from old Gaelic "brad/bradach", meaning spirited. Brady genealogy traces back to King Olum (c. 130) in southern Ireland. The powerful O'Grady/O'Brady clan originated in Clare, where the family had a family seat (feudal home), then moved to Limerick and Cavan. The English version, derived from Old English "brad", meaning broad, and "eage", meaning eye (excellent eyesight), can also be locational, derived from "brad-gehaeg", meaning a broad clearing or referring to the lost-place Broad Island. The oldest English record is 1170 for Bradeie in Oxfordshire. American Brady family history begins relatively late in the 1670s in Maryland and Virginia.
