Bryan Genealogy & History
Bryan family history has a number of paths, since the name actually has two totally separate origins that eventually merged. One is the name Brjan or Bryan, which the Normans brought to England in the 1000s. It comes from the place name Brionne, Normandy. A variant spelling of the name arose separately in Ireland as the personal name Brian, from the Gaelic "bre", meaning a hill or a high place and, by extension, nobility or high position. Bryan genealogy includes the famous Irish King Brian Boru. The Irish version of the name became a surname only about forty years after his death. Eventually the two versions merged, making it difficult to trace where the Bryans and Brians diverge.
