Burgess Genealogy & History

Burgess family history is long and storied. The original root was the Latin "burgus" meaning a town of a certain size (still seen in American city names such as Pittsburgh). The correlative "burgensis" meant a free citizen of such a town who may have been a tradesman, artisan, or land holder. Burgesses were the middle class, neither nobility nor peasants. Burgensis developed into versions of the name Burgess in English, French, and German, all meaning the same thing. For those with the English version of the name, Burgess genealogy dates back at least to the early twelfth century in written records.
