Cochran Genealogy & History

Cochran genealogy is long and notable in the lowlands of western Scotland. The Cochrans are most numerous in Renfrewshire in an area known as the "Lowlands of Cochrane." The derivation of the surname is therefore locational, but the origins of the place name Cochrane are uncertain. It could be related to the Welsh word "coch", meaning "red." Cochrane family history has had many family members at high levels of political involvement, including Robert Cochrane, Earl of Mar (sixteenth century), and Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald (eighteenth and nineteenth centuries). Alternate spellings are common and include Cochrane, Cochern, and Cocherane.
