Dukes Genealogy & History

Dukes is an occupational name stemming from the Middle English words duk, douk, and doke, as well as the Old French duc, which in turn are derived from the Latin ducis, meaning a leader. It also comes from the Gaelic word Maedoc, meaning a follower of some of the early Irish saints named Maedoc. Dukes family history has the first known recording of the name as Herbert le Duc, in the Records of the Templars, Shropshire, England in 1185. Some members of the Dukes genealogy include Jewish literary historian Leopold Dukes; author and poet Carol Muske-Dukes; and NFL Network analyst and football player Jamie Dukes.
