Gentry Genealogy & History

Gentry is a French surname, most likely descending from the Old French "gentil", meaning high born. Contrary to the word's meaning, it was not generally used as a nickname for people who behaved like nobility but was usually reserved for actual members of the aristocracy. The first recorded instance of Gentry family history is Osbert le Gentil, added to Hampshire's Pipe Rolls in 1202. Gentry genealogy counts several well-known individuals, such as actor Robert Gentry, singer-songwriter Bobby Gentry, and author Alistair Gentry. A county in Missouri is named for Missouri native Col. Richard Gentry, who died in the Seminole War.
