Greer Genealogy & History
Greer, also spelled Grayer and Grier, is a Scottish surname, though it is unclear where it comes from. There was and is a Scottish clan MacGregor, which was outlawed for a century and a half, but there is also a village named Graye in Calvados, Normandy. One may draw the name from either source. In any case, Greer family history goes on the books in 1542, when Gilbert Grier was a witness at Dumfries Court, Scotland. Greer genealogy includes Admiral James Greer, namesake of the destroyer USS Greer, and James Manning Greer, who founded the city of Greer in South Carolina.
