Hardin Genealogy & History

Hardin is a Scottish and English locational surname, derived from Old English "hara", meaning rabbit, and "denu", meaning valley. It is thought that two locations were the origin of Hardin family history: Harden/Haredene in Yorkshire/Staffordshire and Harden in Roxburghshire in southern Scotland. Confirming its locational nature, the first record in Hardin genealogy is for John de Hardene (of Harden) in Roxburghshire for paying homage to King Edward I in 1296. Hardin family history includes a coat of arms with three gold martlets, which are mythical birds indicating someone dispossessed of land, with gold indicating generosity. The first Hardin emigrant to America was to Virginia in 1656.
