Keith is a Scottish surname, but it may be of German origin. According to Scottish tradition, a group of Germans, possibly Anglo-Saxons, landed in East Scotland and helped the natives repel the Danish invaders. Legend says that the Scots gave the Germans (the Catti) land. However, given the martial prowess of the Catti, it could just as easily have been taken. Keith family history begins with Bernard de Keth, who witnessed a charter in Kelso in 1201.
