Kennedy Genealogy & History
Kennedy comes from an Old Gaelic word, cinneidigh, meaning "helmeted head"?or at least that is one theory. In any case, the surname first came into use in 11th century Ireland, but spread from there. Kennedy genealogy includes several prominent families in Ireland and Scotland, as well as an American political dynasty for much of the twentieth century and the duration of the current one. Prominent members of that dynasty include Ambassador Joseph P. and his sons John, Robert, and Edward, all three of whom served in the Senate and the first as President. Kennedy family history ended recently in the political sphere with Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy's retirement.
