Lind Genealogy & History

Lind is from the pre-seventh-century Germanic topographical word linda, meaning someone who lived near a linda tree, an older name for a lime tree. It is unclear why it was so popular, although it may have some association with some of the pagan gods. Some of its many spellings include Lyne, Line, Terlinden, Lindman, and Lingner. Lind family history has Hainrich Linde as the first known recording of the name in the register of Konstanz, Germany, in 1254. Some members of the Lind genealogy include Swedish countess and feminist Louise Lind-af-Hageby; author and androgyne advocate Earl Lind; rower Caroline Lind; and naval hygiene pioneer James Lind.
