Weiss Genealogy & History

Weiss is a German surname found in many variations on its own (Weis, Weisser, Weisz, Vaisman, Veisser) and as a prefix (Weissbaum). Derived from Middle High German "wiz", meaning white, it was a nickname for someone with white hair or pale skin, perhaps even a Scandinavian Viking. Alternatively, it can be a locational name referring to places named Weis/Weiss/Weissen. One of the first surnames to be recorded, Weiss family history dates back to medieval times in Saxony. Both the family crest and coat of arms feature a black ibex. Ehrich Weiss is perhaps the most famous in Weiss genealogy, more commonly known as the master magician Harry Houdini.
