North Dakota Genealogy & LDS Family History Centers

North Dakota residents who want to learn about their family origins can begin their search at one of the North Dakota family history centers located throughout the state. These facilities originated just south at the Family History Library in Utah, and offer many of the same resources that this extensive library provides. The family history centers are owned and operated by the North Dakota LDS church and are free to the general public. Visitors can peruse microfilm, print materials and computer software to find the information they are looking for about their ancestry. Office hours vary from location to location, so call the center to find out when you can visit.

When a state is settled later and may not have the government records that other states have, a researchers needs to rethink their approach. In cases like these, consider looking to university archives and manuscript collections for various materials including photographs, maps, local/regional history documents, diaries/journals and other ephemera that tell the story of a community. It is through these kinds of resources that you can find information about your ancestor and the place they lived in.
