Avoyelles Parish has a population of about 40,000 and is located on the eastern border of the state. The parish seat is the town of Marksville. Native Americans were the first to settle the area approximately 2300 years ago the area is named for the Avoyel Tribe, in fact and Spanish began to arrive in the mid-1700s. French settlers immigrated to Avoyelles in the late 1800s, as well as Dutch, German, Italian, and others. This combination of cultures served to create the modern day Cajun culture which spread across the entire state of Louisiana.
