Indigenous Native Americans inhabited the region known as Montana for thousands of years. In 1803, the United States obtained most of Montana from France as a result of the Louisiana Purchase. As a result of the Oregon Treaty of 1846, the western portion of Montana was acquired from England in the Oregon Treaty. The discovery of gold in the 1860s in Montana boosted its population growth. Montana birth records and Montana death records since late 1907 are available, for a fee and with proper photo identification, from the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, Office of Vital Statistics. Additional information is available online. You can order records online or by phone with a credit card or by mail with a personal check or money order made payable to Montana Vital Records.
