Ohio made two failed attempts to require birth and death registration, in 1856 and 1867, before statewide compliance was achieved in 1908. The Ohio Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics maintains Ohio birth records since December 20, 1908, and Ohio death records since January 1, 1954. Copies may be obtained by anyone in person at the Office of Vital Statistics or at City health departments or by mail or online through VitalChek. While there are earlier Ohio vital records available, there is no statewide index. The Ohio Historical Society maintains copies of many county birth and death records for 1867-1908 and a list of county probate court contacts. The Society has an online death index for 1913-1937 and death certificates for 1908-1953 as well as some cholera and veterans' deaths from the 1860s.
