There are affidavits of marriage dating back to 1890, with minimal marriage records as early as December 1887. Brookings County was founded in 1871 and was named after politician and pioneer Wilmot Wood Brookings. It was reduced to its present size in 1873. As of the 2000 Census, the population was over 96% Caucasian.
