Chemung County vital recordsChemung County has an official Director of Public Information that, in addition to assorted other county government agencies, maintains a variety of public records. The Public Information Department is housed within the John H. Hazlett Building at 203 Lake Street in the county seat of Elmira, NY. The County Clerk is located just down the street at 210 Lake Street, and that office has a large number of records on file, as well, including a number of them viewable via the public computer terminals at the office itself. All records viewable on the public terminals are dated fairly recently, however. The Chemung County Vital Records department at 103 Washington Street, and also in Elmira, maintains records for births and deaths that occurred within the county. New York State requires that birth records be on file for at least 75 years and death records for at least 50 years before they become open to the public.
