The Clarke County Circuit Court Clerk issues marriage licenses. Vital records are available to immediate family members (with valid identification) at the Virginia Department of Health for $12.00. Death, marriage, and divorce records become public after 50 years, birth records after 100. Clarke County was named for revolutionary war hero George Rogers Clark, but an e was mistakenly added to Clark's last name during the legislative process. The county was formed in 1836 from part of Frederick County.
