Clarke County was named for revolutionary war hero George Rogers Clark, but an e was mistakenly added to Clark's last name during the legislative process. The county was formed in 1836 from part of Frederick County. The area was originally part of Lord Fairfax's five-million-acre land grant, surveyed by the young George Washington.
