Coal County vital recordsCoal County vital records are available for $15 from the Coalgate Health Department, the state Health Department, or online through VitalChek. Requests can be made in person or by mail, but restrictions apply to records of persons still living. Vital records date to 1907 when Oklahoma initiated recordkeeping upon achieving statehood, but recordkeeping was spotty until the 1940s. Historical records may be available from the Oklahoma Historical Society, and marrige/divorce records available from the Coalgate Clerk of Court. Originally settled by the Choctaw Indians in the 1830s, Coal County was formed in 1907 from Shappaway/Atoka County in the Pushmataha District, Choctaw Nation.
