Culpeper County vital recordsThe clerk of the Culpeper County Circuit Court is the custodian of the court records; the clerk's office is where marriage licenses are issued. Vital records are available to qualified individuals for $12.00 at the Virginia Department of Health. Spotsylvania County (created in 1721), which encompassed all lands west to the Blue Ridge Mountains, was eventually divided into Orange, Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock Counties. Culpeper County was established in 1749, but the first elected County Board of Supervisors did not meet until 1870. They ordered the commonwealth attorney to protect and preserve the records of the County.
