In 1963 in Danville City, local civil rights leaders organized demonstrations in furtherance of racial integration. Expecting confrontations with local authority, protesters wanted to make use of the media. However, when white-owned major newspapers had not yet covered the story after six days, the Associated Press threatened to cut off its wire service. Despite these demonstrations, which often erupted in violence and left jails over-crowded, Danville remained segregated until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed.
