The highest point in New York State is located in Essex, actually, in the town of Keene, and is Mount Marcy. The Essex County Historical Society runs the Adirondack History Center Museum in the county seat of Elizabethtown, NY. The Museum has a large variety of archived historical records and genealogical documents including vital statistics, naturalization and court records, census and property records, regional histories, and much more, and much of it dates as far back as the late 1700s. The Society also provides a guide to archival resources that provides a number of directions and tips on how to perform further research. The office of the County Clerk is also located in Elizabethtown and also maintains a large amount of records, most of which are available for research.
