Both the Chancery Clerk's office, located in Hattiesburg, and the Vital Records Department, in Jackson, are open to public researchers who wish to come and view any public records in person. They also provide certified copies of records to qualified individuals, and the Vital Records Department provides all applicable forms on its website. In addition to researching at those two locations, the MSGenWeb Project provides a sizeable amount of resources online via its website, including census and cemetery records, some of which date back to the mid 1800s. The Library of Petal, Hattiesburg, and Forrest County also has genealogy materials on hand that are open to researchers.
