Only about 1,900 people reside there, and close to 3/4s of them living in the county seat of Burwell, NE. Burwell is also the only town in the county and is where the county courthouse is located, which houses the County Clerk who also performs the functions of the Register of Deeds. The courthouse is at 250 South 8th, and is open on Monday through Friday from 9:00AM till 5:00PM, however is closed for the lunch hour every day except Mondays. The Garfield County Historical Museum is also in Burwell at 737 H Street, and is open on Sundays from 2:00PM till 4:00PM from May 1st till October 1st. Those interested in visiting at other times can call (308) 346-4089 to schedule an appointment. The museum houses a number of local historical documents, records, and artifacts that are available for research.
