Grant County records of birth, death, and marriage from 1917 to the present may be obtained by qualified people (usually family members) from the West Virginia Vital Registration Office for $12 (in most cases). Birth records generally become public after 100 years and death and marriage records after 50 years. The Grant County Clerk maintains older vital records as well as divorce records. Grant County was created in 1866 from parts of Hardy County and named for Civil War Union Army General Ulysses S. Grant. The area now known as Grant County is located within the territory once referred to as the Northern Neck of Virginia.
