Haakon County was not established until 1915; records prior to 1915 may be located in Stanley County, from which it was formed. Due to the large number of Scandinavian settlers, it was named for Haakon VII of Norway. Prior to 1914, the area now known as Haakon County formed a part of Stanley County. In 1916, Philip was selected as the county seat.
