Holmes County vital recordsHolmes County, which has the dubious distinction of having the lowest life expectency of any county in the entire United States, has its Chancery Clerk's office in the county seat of Lexington, at 2 Court Sq. The Chancery Clerk maintains property and other records, excluding personal vital records, such as birth, death, and marriage. Those three, available from the early 1900s, are handled by the Mississippi State Department of Health's Vital Records division, in Jackson, MS. The division provides all required applications via its website, and once filled out, they can be mailed in along with the applicable fee, or taken into the office in person. Requests for certified copies of records can also be submitted over the phone at 601-576-7981, or online via the VitalChek system. Credit cards are an acceptable form of payment for both phone and web transactions.
