Hyde County was created from Buffalo County in 1873 and named after James Hyde, a Civil War veteran and an influential pioneer citizen of South Dakota. The Crow Creek Indian Reservation spans Hyde and Buffalo Counties. The 2000 census put the population at just over 91% White and slightly less than 8% Native American.
