The county was established in 1805, which was, in fact, in the midst of Jefferson's term as President. The county seat of Watertown derived its name due to the plethora of bodies of water in and around the county area, including Lake Ontario which the county borders. The Jefferson County Historical Society operates an Archives and Collections library within the Paddock Mansion at 228 Washington Street in Watertown, NY. Within the library are over 100,000 historical and genealogical artifacts and records, and they are all available for viewing and research by appointment. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (315) 782-3491. The Society will also accept queries by mail, and will perform them for $10 per item. The primary County Clerk office is located in Watertown, as well, and maintains a large number of additional records.
