Allow at least 15 minutes for each request. Lunchtime requests generally take longer. Birth, death, and marriage records are available to qualified people for $12 (in most cases). Records dated before 1917 are also maintained by the Kanawha County Clerk. Kanawha County was authorized in 1788 from Greenbrier and Montgomery Counties but was not actually formed until 1789. It was named for the Great Kanawha River.
