Named for Mingo Indian Chief Logan (who was named after James Logan), Logan County was created in 1824 from Cabell, Giles, Kanawha, and Tazewell Counties. Following the massacre of members of his family by Englishmen in 1774, Logan allied his tribe with the British and instigated what became known as Lord Dunmore's War.
