In Arizona, marriage and divorce records have always been considered court records rather than Arizona vital records. Requests for copies of either Arizona marriage records or Arizona divorce records should be made on a county level to the Clerk of the Superior Court for the county where the marriage license was issued or where the divorce was granted. The Arizona Office of Vital Records maintains no information on marriages and divorces in the state. Divorce records have been found in different civil court records at different times. Originally divorce records were found in the records of the Territorial Legislature starting in 1863. The records then were recorded in District Courts in the 1870s, and later the jurisdiction was moved to the Superior Courts where the records reside today.
