Marriages and divorces are not considered confidential New Mexico vital records but instead are public district court records. New Mexico marriage records are maintained by the county clerk in the county where license was issued; New Mexico divorce records are maintained by the clerk of the district court where the divorce was granted. There are a few marriage and divorce court records dating back to 1727, but most records date from the 1860s. Historical records can be found at the State Records Center and Archives, under the jurisdiction of the New Mexico Commission of Public Records, including marriage registers, licenses, certificates, surveys, and listings for 1864-1931 as well as divorce records prior to 1912 in court dockets. The New Mexico State Library maintains a Southwest Collection as well as State and Federal Documents collections, which can also contain some court information.
