South Carolina required marriage licenses as of 1911. The state Office of Vital Records maintains South Carolina marriage records since July 1950 and South Carolina divorce records since July 1962. Earlier marriage records, and current records, are available from the probate judge in the county where the license was issued. Earlier divorce records, and current year records, are available from the clerk of court where the divorce petition was filed. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History had several thousand cubic feet of manuscript and microfilm records, including South Carolina vital records dating to 1641, specifically court records with marriage settlements, typed copies of selected records to 1860 by the Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and records collected by the Works Progress Administration.
