Virginia marriage records are available from January 1853 on through the Clerk of Court in county or city where license was issued. See http://www.courts.state.va.us/directories/circ.pdf for a list of Virginia circuit courts. The Archives Division of the Library of Virginia has copies of marriage records prior to 1936. In addition, the Library of Virginia contains an online database that is a compilation of various card index files to marriages (formerly available to researchers in the Library's reading room) that were created over the years by different individuals. Virginia divorce records are available from January 1918 through the Clerk of Court in the county or city where the divorce was granted. They become public record fifty years after the event.
