Nelson County vital recordsCreated from Amherst County in 1807, Nelson County formed its own government in 1808. The Circuit Court Clerk's Office houses A Guide to the Nelson County (Va.) Register of Marriages of Negroes, Volume 1, 1865-1877, along with births (18531874), deaths (18531874), and marriages from 1808 on. The office cannot perform personal research, but they will copy properly identified documents, (book, page number, and court date) for a small fee. Vital records are available to qualified individuals for $12.00 at the Virginia Department of Health. Death, marriage, and divorce records become public after 50 years, birth records after 100.
