The Nottoway County Clerk of the Circuit Court is the official keeper of the records of the court and the locality. Some of these records, which include civil cases and marriage records, date back to the foundation of the county in 1789. Vital records are available to qualified individuals for $12.00 at the Virginia Department of Health. Records are eventually open to the public. The first known inhabitants were native American Indians of the Iroquoian nation tribe called Nadowa, which gave its name to the region.
